We are dreading the arrival of Small Hive Beetle, a bug that wreaks havoc in apiaries elsewhere in the world. Despite an active education programme many of us in the UK are still ignorant about this pest.
Hence the confusion about whether it’s the beetle that is small, or the hive (it’s the beetle). The gag also teases the ‘know-all’ – that member of every beekeeping society who pontificates given any opportunity.
